How Many Days Until Veterans Day?
Veterans Day 2025 will be observed on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
About Veterans Day
Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11 to honor military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The holiday coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries to mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.
History of Veterans Day
Armistice Day
World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
First Commemoration
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, stating: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory."
National Holiday
Armistice Day was approved as a legal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace and to honor veterans of World War I.
Renaming to Veterans Day
After World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the 1938 act, striking the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
Uniform Holiday Bill
The Uniform Holiday Bill was signed to ensure three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day.
Return to November 11
Due to the historic and patriotic significance of the actual date, President Gerald Ford signed a law returning the observance of Veterans Day to November 11, beginning in 1978.
