History of the Holiday
Following Dr. King's assassination in 1968, there was a movement to create a federal holiday in his honor. Congressman John Conyers first introduced legislation for a federal holiday shortly after King's death. After facing significant opposition, the holiday was finally signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983, and was first observed on January 20, 1986. By 2000, all 50 states had made it a state government holiday.
Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not just a day off but a "day on" — a national day of service where Americans are encouraged to volunteer in their communities. It is seen as a time to reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change advocated by Dr. King.
