About Pentecost
Pentecost, also known as Whitsunday, is a major Christian feast celebrated on the 50th day (the seventh Sunday) after Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot), as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2).
The Event of Pentecost (Acts 2)
According to the biblical account, the followers of Jesus were gathered together when a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the house. Then, "divided tongues as of fire" appeared and rested on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (languages) as the Spirit enabled them. This miraculous event drew a large crowd of devout Jews from various nations who were in Jerusalem for Shavuot. Amazingly, each person heard the Apostles speaking in their own native language about God's deeds of power.
